Repairs and upgrades
You can have me visit your premises, or you can drop-off your equipment and pick it up when the work is completed. I can offer advice on suitable upgrades, and will order and install components as required.
Viruses and all that
Virus removal is becoming steadily more difficult as the years pass; antivirus software is becoming less effective at protecting users and their computers against modern strains. Recent infestations rarely consists of a single virus; rather, multiple malicious programs will take up residence in your computer, like some kind of squatter commune, and collaborate to defeat attempts at removing them. Nowadays the most reliable remedy for an infestation is to reformat the hard disk and reinstall the operating system, but this isn't always convenient or practical.
It can take me a day or more to clean up a single computer. I have seen very low prices for virus-cleaning services; prices so low that I could only match them by wiping the hard disk and reinstalling the operating system immediately, without doing any investigation at all. My service is aimed at clients who don't want their hard disk wiped, unless that is absolutely necessary.
Websites
We can work together to create a design, or you can provide completed design documents (graphics, layout etc.) which I will convert into a website for you. I am an experienced programmer, and have worked on very complex websites as well as simple homepages. If you already have a website, and just want someone to make some simple changes, I can do that too.
By the way, this page you are viewing barely counts as a website; but it is clear, and it conveys my message in a way that works on any browser (including mobile browsers). It is also accessible to those who can't use a mouse, those who have to use an audio screen-reader, those who need to magnify the text to be able to read it, and those who for whatever reason use a very old-fashioned browser that can't handle Javascript or CSS. I am glad to be able to welcome all such people as site visitors.
As a guide, this page has taken under a day to make; and most of that time was spent composing the text.
Networks
Domestic routers are the little plastic boxes with blinking lights that connect most users to the internet. They are computers in their own right, and are remarkable feats of miniaturisation.
They are also engineering compromises, and have many limitations. I'm familiar with numerous brands and models of domestic router equipment and wi-fi gateways, as well as some of the (much more expensive) commercial router products. I can set these devices up to work the way you want them to. I can discuss with you your firewall requirements, and implement and manage a firewall for you. I carry a small stock of substitute equipment that I can lend you while yours is being repaired or replaced, if that is needed.
Pricing
Pricing is based on rates of £100 per day or £50 per half-day, but I will be happy to quote for complete jobs, including no-fix no-fee deals.
Network Services and Support
JCS can also offer inexpensive website hosting; flexible, spam-filtered email services; and general "I need a geek" support (I'm bilingual in english and geekish, and can explain technical matters in plain language).
